Most of us will spend nearly a third of our lives working which means that our career choice and the space in which we work is of vital importance. And regardless of where you find yourself on your chosen career path, the global pandemic may be causing you to reflect and wonder if it’s time to make a change?

According to a recent Washington Post article, nearly a third of the US workforce under the age of 40 has considered making a career change.

The pandemic has helped us understand that we can afford greater flexibility in how and where we work. There has been no better time than now to consider changing jobs or careers, and understanding Human Design can help.

What is Human Design?

Human Design is a system based on multiple areas of science including, biochemistry, genetics, quantum physics of neutrinos, and the Chakra system.

It helps explain why what works for one person may not work for another. It is also the key to getting what you want; consistent results that have a positive impact on your personal and professional life and relationships.

If you want to understand your professional skills, strengths, and work style and how to apply them for professional success and abundance, Human Design is the key. Imagine how much more value you can contribute when you understand how to effectively apply your natural skills, strengths, and talents.

The 5 Career Type Categories

Advisors (Projectors)

Advisors are natural leaders, managers, guides, and problem solvers. They have the ability to identify potential in others and are skilled mentors. Advisors are also skilled at finding and creating efficiencies such as resource gaps that are either human, financial, or workflow based. They can offer short cuts and practical solutions that can lead to optimal business outcome and sustainable business growth.

A traditional 9–5 platform does not work for them. They need flexible work environments where the focus is on qualitative work and not quantitative input. They also work best with a workload that is not overly taxing or demanding.

There is no limit to what they can achieve so long as they’re mindful about how much energy they are expending, and they are operating in a role meant to guide others.

Efficiency can be applied in many areas, such as workflows utilized by office managers and directors and the business solutions implemented. This applies regardless of industry.

If you’re an Advisor and seeking a new career opportunity, look for a role that will optimize your natural problem-solving skills.

If you’re an employer welcoming an Advisor to your team, prepare to maximize the contributions an Advisor will bring to your business. Namely, the energy, skills and talents required to guide others in cultivating a productive and efficient work environment. When you’re looking to create efficiency in your business, this is one smart hiring decision.

Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s creator is a great example of an Advisor. He created an efficient way to shop online and get products directly into customer’s hands. With the wide product and price selection and at home delivery, it’s a system that’s hard to beat.

Innovators (Manifestors)

Innovators are thought leaders who are skilled at generating new ideas, and products and services that address unmet business needs.

In a team setting you can count on them to make quick decisions and inspire others to action. They require trust to work independently and flexibility to work in the setting best suited to support their creative flow.

If you’re an Innovator seeking a career opportunity, you’ll need freedom to create and innovate. Any form of micromanagement will hinder your natural skills and your ability to bring inspirational ideas to life.

If you’re an employer with an Innovator on your team or hiring one, make sure you have an environment that fosters their creativity and allows them to take the initiative and inspire others to do the same. An Innovator will be best suited for executing any new and inspiring ideas and projects in your business.

Maya Angelou is a literary legend and Innovator. Her contributions as a poet, writer, activist and thought leader have inspired many. Her creative energy has graced the pages of countless books, essays, and poems. Her collaborations with Martin Luther King and Malcolm X made an indelible impact during the Civil Rights Movement. In every imaginable medium, including TV screens and the silver screen, Maya made her mark and shared her vision, innovative ideas, and inspiration.

Classic Builders (Generators)

About 70% of the world population is made up of Classic Builders and Express Builders. They can easily and quickly grow a sustainable business.

Their productivity can extend over long periods of time so long as they are enjoying the task at hand and mastering their skillset. They can generate productive momentum through their ability to energize, inspire and uplift others.

Like Advisors, they are excellent team players and collaborators and are effective at directing their energy and focus.

If you’re a Classic Builder seeking a career change, look for opportunities that offer the kind of work you will enjoy devoting lots of time to. Also pay special attention to the work environment to ensure it is a supportive one.

If you’re looking to hire a Classic Builder for your team, make sure you can provide a project that will maximize their ability to enjoy the work and to invest in developing and mastering the skills required to get the job done. And if you have a Classic Builder on your team, if you notice they’re not giving it their all, it’s a sure sign they need a new project or role.

Oprah has mastered the art and journey of self-development, reflection, and establishing powerful human connections. She makes it look easy because it is something she enjoys and is good at. Oprah is constantly inspiring others and has never taken a day off from her popular show. She is known for her many collaborations with brands that help to bring her message across all her business endeavors.

Express Builders (Manifesting Generators)

Like Classic Builders, Express Builders are masters at creating and moving things forward. They tend to be unapologetic trailblazers.

These natural multitaskers can focus their energy onto many tasks, jobs, careers, and interests. They have the ability to master many skills, talents, and businesses simultaneously while keeping multiple interests and roles within an organization. Once they devote their energy to something they’re unstoppable. Express Builders can turn inspirational ideas into tangible business outcomes very quickly.

If you’re an Express Builder seeking a career change look for opportunities that allow for lots of flexibility and freedom to inspire and create. For Express Builders the classical notion of one career for life or one job that defines your career may not resonate with you. You will also enjoy an opportunity that offers flexibility in how you work, what you work on, and how you express that creativity.

If you’re looking to hire an Express Builder, try not to fit them in a box. They’re naturally skilled at multitasking and work on several projects and perhaps even taking on multiple roles in the organization. If you already have one on your team allow them the space to create and innovate on multiple projects. It’s the best way to maximize their potential and contributions to support the business.

Elon Musk is an excellent example of an Express Builder. He runs multiple companies and is considered a transportation revolutionist. To his credit we now have sustainable cars, underground tunnels, and transport to outer space. All this, in addition to being one of the founders of PayPal, a company that supports easy and safe online payments across the globe.

Evaluators (Reflectors)

Evaluators make up 1% of the work population. They have an innate ability to investigate and observe the conditions of the people and space around them to identify what’s working and what’s not. Their insight leads to ensuring business sustainability and longevity.

Evaluators are also objective analyzers. They are good at assessing where improvements need to be made in order to create a thriving, equitable work culture. They are also natural objective facilitators of effective problem-solving solutions.

If you’re an evaluator seeking a career change, look for the right work environment including the culture and the people in the organization. An environment that is less hustle and bustle is ideal for achieving the quality of work you can naturally produce.

If you have an Evaluator on your team, maximize their potential by trusting their ability to evaluate progress, as well as the effectiveness of environmental conditions. A supportive team environment is ideal for optimizing their contributions toward correcting, changing, or perfecting the work or work environment.

It’s been reported that William E. Boeing was an Evaluator. He was known for being one of the largest aerospace manufacturers in the world.

Whichever category most resonates with how you naturally work and attain professional achievements, there is work and an ideal environment to amplify your skills, talents, and potential contributions. And note that despite these clearly defined categories, the intention is not to box yourself in, but rather to expand your opportunities. To do this, Human Design offers a framework to help you reflect on what the next best career path will be.
